Honeymoon Safaris in Tanzania
Bush & beach · Private vehicle · Just the two of you
Sunset over the Serengeti, then the Indian Ocean. A honeymoon here is usually two trips in one, and they are far better planned together than separately.
- Safari and Zanzibar as one itinerary
- Private guide and vehicle throughout
- Depart any date from Arusha or JRO
Overview
What a Honeymoon Itinerary Adds
Honeymoon safaris in Tanzania — the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar's beaches, planned as one journey by an Arusha-based team.
Bush first, beach after
Game drives while the energy is there, then Zanzibar to do nothing at all. The order matters more than most couples expect.
Nobody else in the vehicle
A private 4x4 and your own guide, so the day belongs to the two of you rather than to a group's timetable.
Rooms chosen for two
Private suites and honeymoon settings, booked at properties that cater for couples rather than filled from whatever is left.
One itinerary, one team
Flights, transfers and lodges arranged together, so the safari and the island are not two separate bookings that have to be made to meet.

Honeymoons
Why Tanzania Is a Great Honeymoon
A honeymoon safari works because it is the opposite of a resort. There is no schedule to keep, no crowd to navigate and very little to decide. Days fall into a simple rhythm — out at dawn, back for a long lunch, out again in the golden hour, dinner under more stars than you have ever seen — and the two of you spend it in a private vehicle with a guide who leaves you alone when you want to be left alone.
Tanzania also has the advantage of a natural second act. A week on the northern circuit followed by four or five nights on Zanzibar gives you the drama first and the recovery afterwards, and the ninety-minute flight between them is the only logistics you have to think about.
The lodges know exactly what a honeymoon is. Told in advance, most will arrange a private dinner somewhere unexpected, flowers and a bath drawn when you get back from the evening drive, a sundowner set up on a kopje as the light goes. None of it needs organising by you — it just needs telling us at the booking stage.
The shape of the trip
How We Design a Honeymoon
Fewer places, longer stays
The commonest honeymoon mistake is a park every night. Three nights in one superb camp beats one night in three ordinary ones — you stop packing, the staff learn your names, and the place starts to feel like yours.
Small camps over big lodges
Ten or twelve tents rather than sixty rooms. The difference in atmosphere at dinner is the difference between a private house and a hotel, and it costs less than most couples expect.
Privacy built in
A private vehicle throughout is standard with us, never shared. Add a private guide and a camp with well-spaced tents and you will go whole days barely seeing another guest.
A beach ending
Zanzibar, Mafia or Pemba after the safari. Four or five nights of doing nothing at all is the right ending, and the contrast with the early starts of the safari week is the whole point.
The theatre, handled quietly
Bush dinners, sundowners on a kopje, a private breakfast in the open, flowers and a drawn bath after the evening drive. Tell us it is a honeymoon and it gets arranged without you lifting a finger.
Worth the splurge
The Moments Couples Remember
A balloon flight over the Serengeti
Lifting off in the dark, floating over the plains as the sun comes up, and landing to a champagne breakfast laid out on the grass. Expensive and worth it, and the single most photographed hour of most honeymoons.
Read moreA night in a mobile migration camp
Canvas, lantern light and a campfire, positioned wherever the herds are that month. As close to the classic romantic safari of the imagination as it is possible to book.
Read moreSunset on the Ngorongoro rim
Two thousand three hundred metres up, looking down into the crater as the light goes and the cold comes in, with a fire waiting behind you.
Read moreA dhow at sunset off Zanzibar
A traditional wooden sailing boat, the light going gold over the Indian Ocean, and nothing whatever to do for two hours.
Read moreA private bush dinner
A table, lanterns, a fire and the two of you somewhere with no building in sight. Almost every camp will arrange it if asked, and almost nobody thinks to ask.
Honeymoon questions
Honeymoon Safari FAQs
When is the best time for a honeymoon safari?
June to October is the classic window: dry, reliable weather, superb game viewing and the migration in the northern Serengeti. January and February are hot, clear and slightly quieter, with calving on the southern plains. If you are getting married in the European spring, note that March to May brings the long rains — the parks are green, empty and much cheaper, but you should expect wet afternoons and some camps closed. Zanzibar follows a similar pattern, so a combined trip works best in the same months.
What does a honeymoon safari cost?
Because you are two people sharing a vehicle rather than four or six, the per-person cost is naturally higher than for a group. Realistically, a mid-range honeymoon of seven safari nights and four on Zanzibar sits well above a standard package, and luxury camps push it considerably higher. The levers that matter most are season and lodge choice: travelling in the shoulder months of November or early March, or mixing one special camp with two excellent mid-range ones, can reduce the total substantially without changing the route.
Can guests contribute to our honeymoon as a wedding gift?
Yes, and a good number of our couples do exactly that. We can issue a quotation broken into components — a night at a particular camp, the balloon flight, the Zanzibar leg — so that a honeymoon fund or gift registry can be set against real items rather than a lump sum. Ask us for an itemised proposal at the booking stage and we will format it so it can be shared with guests directly.
How long should a honeymoon safari be?
Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot: six or seven on safari, then four or five on the coast. That gives you enough time in the parks to stop counting animals and start watching them, and enough beach afterwards to actually rest. Under a week and you will spend a disproportionate share of it travelling; over two weeks and most couples find they want to be home.
Do lodges do anything special for honeymooners?
Almost all of them, and it costs nothing extra at most properties. Told in advance, camps will arrange a private dinner, flowers or rose petals, a bath drawn after the evening game drive, a cake, or a sundowner set up somewhere with a view. Some offer a complimentary upgrade or a spa treatment. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate if you have one, as a handful of properties ask to see it for honeymoon rates.
Should we tell the lodges it is our honeymoon?
Tell us, and we will tell them — that is the whole trick. Camps genuinely enjoy marking the occasion but they can only do it if they know in advance, and guests who mention it at check-in usually get a nice gesture rather than the properly arranged version. Flag it when you enquire and we will note it on every booking, so the private dinner, the flowers or the sundowner is set up before you arrive rather than improvised after you do.
Is a safari too active for a honeymoon?
Only if you build it badly. Game drives mean early starts, and back-to-back park changes are genuinely tiring. The fix is fewer places and longer stays, with free afternoons and a camp that has a pool and a good lunch. Couples who want to sleep in can simply do so — it is a private vehicle and the schedule is entirely yours. Finishing on the coast solves the rest.
Can we combine a safari with Zanzibar?
It is the standard honeymoon and the easiest thing we arrange. Flights run daily from Arusha and from the Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar, taking ninety minutes to a little over two hours. Going straight from a bush airstrip to the beach without returning through Arusha is the smoothest routing, and we build that connection in as a matter of course. Stone Town for a night, then a beach hotel on the north or east coast.

7-Day Wildebeest Migration Safari
We had an amazing 7-day safari visiting Tarangire National Park, the Ndutu region of southern Serengeti, Central Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater. Before arriving in Tanzania I had regular communication with Francisco, the owner of Lappet Faced Safaris. Francisco always responded promptly and answered all of our questions as we planned this custom safari. I was very impressed by his prompt and thorough responses to questions and his willingness to be flexible with our itinerary during the planning stages of this trip. We were met at the airport by our driver/guide, Amani, who accompanied us for the duration of the safari. To say that Amani went above and beyond was an understatement. He was an amazing guide and he did a great job in finding various wildlife and putting us in an excellent position to observe and photograph. He was also very good at answering our questions about the wildlife, the vegetation and the people of Tanzania. I was very impressed and I could tell that he enjoyed his work and that he knew what he was talking about when explaining things about different animals. It really made the trip a more complete experience. I was very pleased with our accommodations throughout our safari, as well as with the food. Everything matched the information that we received from Francisco when we were planning our trip. Lappet Faced Safaris is a small locally-owned safari company and they provide first-class service. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in visiting Tanzania and experiencing a safari. Francisco is flexible in putting together a trip itinerary so do not hesitate to share what your interests are for your safari experience and he will work with you to meet those plans. We wanted to see the wildebeest migration during their calving season, as well as seeing other resident wildlife and what we experienced during our safari was simply amazing.

A memorable journey for a lifetime 💙
This was my first time travelling in Africa. Together with my Mum and two aunties we travelled as a family group of four. Generally it was an educative, cheering and lifetime memorable journey. All of us loved the safari. A genuine big thank to Lappet Faced Safari and our guide Frank. The trip was not only well arranged, safe and sound, but also full of luck. At the trip planning stage, the company general manager Francisco was very patient to answer all kinds of questions and made adjustments according to my demands as effective as possible. The cost breakdown was highly detailed. Before starting the trip, I had some concerns because my mum and aunties whose average age are nearly 60 and do not understand English. I expected that the trip might be a bit uneasy. But our guide Frank turned out to be an easy-going guy. He is so nice and got on well with three ladies. Even they don’t really understand each other’s language, there was no barrier at all :) And the car had been kept clean and tidy every morning before we get on. The ladies often praised “Frank你真棒!” (Frank you are so reliable!)During the safari, Frank could always discover those special animals that we never had such sharp eyes to notice🤣. We managed to spot the big five without much difficulties. Apart from those, we also spotted some rare creatures such as cheetah cubs, honey badger, serval, lappet faced eagle (safari company logo :D), steppe eagle, etc. Frank is absolutely professional. He introduced me all the animals alone the way in great details. Sometimes he would carefully double check the bird species in a beautiful birds illustration book. The safari was full of joy and surprise. We enjoyed every second in the wild nature of Tanzania so much that we even feel reluctant to back to city life🥲.P.S. I fulfilled my wish —— to make my own work of animal illustrations! Check them out 👇👇👇

Best custom Private Small Group Safari Experience by Lappet Faced Safaris
Francisco was amazing at organizing exactly the trip we wanted. He took the time to answer all our questions and custom made our trip with a great price. We chose the luxury tented lodges but the mid-priced accommodations looked good too. We saw so many animals up close, right by our Land Rovers, on our custom private 10 day safari (Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro). He also arranged a three night get away on Zanzibar at the Zuri Zanzibar resort. It was fabulous! All of the accommodations were fabulous and the food was delicious. You can trust Francisco to organize your safari and make it the trip of your lifetime! This trip exceeded our expectations and that is saying a lot for our group! Our guides, Ukadi & Alfred, were also amazing, they have a lot of experience as a safari guides and have vast knowledge on the animals, plants, trees and the culture. They spotted so many animals and birds for us, and were patient while we photographed everything. We even got to see all of the Big 5! We saw huge pools of hippos, leopards, cheetahs, lions, elephants, rhinos, Cape buffalos, zebras, wildebeest, ostriches, baboons, hyenas and much, much more! We really recommend going with Lappet Faced Safari tour company, they are the best! Thank you for sharing your beautiful world with us.
