“Francisco was amazing at organizing exactly the trip we wanted. He took the time to answer all our questions and custom made our trip with a great price. We chose the luxury tented lodges but the mid-priced accommodations looked good too.”

Wildlife heaven

Wildlife Safaris in Tanzania

Known as a wildlife heaven, Tanzania is one of the top tourist destinations in Africa, home to some of the greatest safari parks in the world — the famous Serengeti National Park and the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, hosting the breathtaking Great Migration. Around a million wildebeest and zebra cross these parks each year in one of nature's grandest spectacles. From Tarangire's emerald baobab country to the seductive coast of Saadani, there is something for everyone who wants to go on safari in Tanzania.

Types of Tanzania Safari Packages

Selecting the most appropriate safari package is essential to ensure that your motives, requirements and physical conditions are met. At Lappet Faced Safaris we offer three main types of safari packages — Midrange, Luxury and High-End — each designed to showcase the beauty of Tanzania.

Silver tier

Midrange Safaris

Perfect for any traveller who wants to strike a balance between enjoyment and cost. Comfortable lodges or tented camps with all the essentials — ideal for families and adventurous travellers who don't want to compromise on comfort and authenticity.

Gold tier

Luxury Safaris

Designed for clientele who want a higher degree of comfort: high-end lodges and tented camps with extras like swimming pools, gourmet food and spa treatment for a more sophisticated, leisure-oriented safari.

Platinum tier

High-End Safaris

The highest level of luxury and exclusivity — privately owned lodges and furnished tented camps, secluded and service-obsessed. Think private guides, five-star dining, evening wildlife excursions and breakfast in the wild with champagne on the side.

Extensive first-hand knowledge of Tanzania's parks: where the light is best, where the herds are moving, and when to be there.

Planning questions

Tanzania Safari FAQs

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?

Five to seven days in the parks is the sweet spot. Three days is enough for Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater and will still deliver a real safari. Five lets you add the Serengeti properly, which is where most of the memorable sightings happen. Seven gives you time to follow the migration to wherever it actually is that month rather than hoping it is near your camp, and to slow the driving days down. Beyond ten days you are into the western Serengeti, the southern parks or a beach finish in Zanzibar.

What does a Tanzania safari cost?

Realistically, from around $200 per person per day at the budget end to $500 and well beyond for luxury camps, all-inclusive of vehicle, guide, park fees, accommodation and meals. Tanzania is not a cheap safari destination and the reason is public: park fees alone run to a significant share of the daily cost, and they go to the parks. Group size matters enormously — the vehicle and guide cost the same for two people as for six, so a family or a group of friends pays far less per head than a couple.

Do I need vaccinations or a visa?

Most nationalities need a visa, which can be obtained online in advance or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present — including a layover of more than twelve hours. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all safari areas. Check the current requirements with your doctor and your own government's travel advice six to eight weeks before you fly.

Will I definitely see the Big Five?

Four of the five are close to certain on a week-long northern-circuit safari: lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all seen regularly, with leopard the most elusive. Rhino is the difficult one — the Ngorongoro Crater holds a small black rhino population and sightings are common but not guaranteed, often at a distance. Any operator who promises you all five is selling you something they cannot deliver. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look and the time in the park to do it properly.

Is a Tanzania safari suitable for children?

Yes, with some planning. We keep driving days shorter, choose lodges with pools and family units, and pick guides who enjoy explaining things to a nine-year-old. Some luxury camps set a minimum age of six or twelve; the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire work well for families of almost any age. Very young children find the long transfer days harder than the game drives, so we build the route around that.

What is the difference between the northern and southern circuits?

The northern circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara — is the famous one: the highest wildlife densities, the migration, the best road access and the widest choice of lodges. The southern circuit — Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi — is wilder, far quieter, better for walking and boat safaris, and usually reached by light aircraft. First-time visitors almost always want the north. Anyone returning for a second safari should look south.
