Mikumi National Park
The accessible Serengeti of the south
About Mikumi National Park
Mikumi is the most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks — its open Mkata floodplain, framed by the Uluguru Mountains, has earned it the nickname "the Serengeti of the south". Lion, giraffe, zebra, elephant and buffalo graze within sight of the main viewing circuit.
Just four hours by road from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi makes a superb short safari — two or three days deliver classic big-game viewing without a flight — and it links naturally with Nyerere and Udzungwa on a longer southern route.

Mikumi: A Real Safari Within Driving Distance
Mikumi is the most accessible national park in southern Tanzania — roughly four to five hours by road from Dar es Salaam on a surfaced highway, which makes it the only genuine safari park in the country you can reach without a flight or a very long drive. That accessibility is why it works as a short break, a weekend from the city, or a first taste of the bush before committing to something longer.
The Mkata floodplain in the north of the park is often compared to the Serengeti in miniature: open grassland with flat-topped acacias, herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and impala, and lion that are frequently seen. Elephant are common, giraffe are everywhere, and the hippo pools near the park entrance are reliable and easy.
Mikumi borders Nyerere National Park and shares its ecosystem, so animals move freely between them. It is often added to the front or back of a southern-circuit itinerary rather than visited on its own.
What you see
Mikumi Highlights
The Mkata floodplain
Open grassland with big herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest, and the park's most reliable lion sightings. Best in the early morning.
Hippo pools
A short drive from the main gate, with dozens of hippo, resident crocodile and excellent waterbird viewing. Easy and popular with families.
Elephant and giraffe
Both are common and relaxed around vehicles, and the Masai giraffe here are among the most photogenic in southern Tanzania.
Genuine road access
The only Tanzanian park of this quality that you can reach on tarmac from a major city, which makes a two or three-day safari realistic.

Mikumi FAQs
Is Mikumi worth visiting?
Yes, with realistic expectations. It does not have the density of the Serengeti or the drama of the Ngorongoro Crater, but it delivers a genuine safari with lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and abundant plains game, and it does so within a half-day drive of Dar es Salaam. For travellers with limited time or budget, or anyone finishing on the coast, it is excellent value.
How many days do I need?
Two nights is enough to see the park properly. One night works as a stopover on the way to Ruaha or Udzungwa, which is how many itineraries use it. Three or more nights only makes sense if you are combining it with the neighbouring parks rather than staying put.
When is the best time to go?
June to October for the classic dry-season conditions: thin vegetation, animals concentrated at water and easy driving. The green season from December to March is beautiful and much quieter, with excellent birding, though the grass on the floodplain grows high enough to hide game.
